Here is the clean English translation:
A clever combination of ground sheet and regular sleeping pad.
This ingenious piece of sleeping gear was developed in the 1980s for the Finnish armed forces. The additional insulation and protective effect of the fabric cover ensures more comfort even in snowy and inhospitable terrain. Two integrated elastic webbing loops keep the mat simply and reliably rolled up during transport and storage.
At its core, this is simply a piece of closed-cell foam mat, like any simple sleeping pad. What makes it special is the cover. The lightweight, waterproof cover performs several tasks simultaneously: It protects the foam from punctures, tears, and abrasion. It improves insulation by trapping air. And – perhaps most noticeably – it provides a small personal groundsheet: The edges of the cover extend 25 cm on both sides, creating a 100 cm wide, clean sleeping surface.
One side of the mat is fitted with a rubberized fabric piece the size of the inner foam core. This provides a non-slip surface that securely holds either the mat itself or you and your sleeping bag in place.
A question we are often asked: Should the smooth or the rubberized side face up? The official instruction from the Finnish armed forces is: rubberized side up, towards the sleeping bag. In practice, however, it also works the other way around, just a little differently. Our opinion on this: Use it as you see fit – both variants have their advantages.
