Fire striker with flint

The "Fire Striker"

The hand-forged fire striker comes from a German blacksmith who has been involved in the art of fire striking for decades. Each product has been individually and precisely crafted according to medieval and practical design. The use of high-quality carbon-rich iron makes it possible to produce strong sparks with minimal striking force.

Through fire and the power of the hammer, the cold iron in the blacksmith's hand becomes a new part of a whole. Workpieces are created in both practical and aesthetic forms, often retaining their shape for thousands of years. Using the pictures, we illustrate how elaborate the production of an individually hand-forged fire striker is and what the individual work steps look like.

The "Flint"

From Roman times to modern life, fire was made using a fire striker, flint, and tinder. The flint plays a very special role here, as it generates sparks with the help of its sharp edges and the carbon-rich iron.

The more sharp edges a flint has, the better it is for striking fire. The size of the finished flints has been chosen to ensure perfect handling.

The flint, originating from Germany, belongs to the chert rocks and is characterized by its high silicon dioxide content (very fine-grained quartz and moganite).

Our flints offered for sale are hand-broken and specially selected to ensure the highest quality.

Tinder made from "Cattail Seeds"

The tinder plays a very special role, as it is supposed to catch and store the spark.

Cattail seeds are very well suited for this, as their fine structure allows them to ignite very easily. Often, a single spark is enough, and the tinder glows.

How to do it:

Guide the fire striker in a short, downward motion along a sharp edge of the flint. The tinder lies on the flint, as the sparks tend to fly upwards. Let the glowing sparks fall onto suitable tinder material and continue to glow. Surround the glowing ember with dry combustible material and blow gently until a flame is produced.

Note:

Since each product is individually handcrafted, there may be minor production-related deviations in terms of shape and surface. For us, this is a sign of quality and a guarantee of the craftsmanship involved.
